ABOUT DR. SELESNICK

PAST

Dr. Selesnick was a graduate of the six year "Honors Program in Medical Education" at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.  He completed his orthopedic residency training at Michael Reese Hospital Medical Center, also in Chicago, Illinois.  At that time, he also served as the assistant to the Chicago Bulls team physician, Dr. H. Bates Noble.  Dr. Selesnick also served as the team physician for the National Basketball Association pre-draft rookie camp in 1983 and 1984.  Dr. Selesnick received additional sports medicine training at Temple University Center for Sports Medicine Science in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, under the direction of Dr. Ray Moyer, the team physician for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Dr. Selesnick moved to Miami, Florida in July 1985 where he currently practices as an orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty in sports medicine.   Dr. Selesnick was the team physician for the Miami Marlins baseball team from 1985 through 1988.  He also served as the Miami Miracle baseball team physician from 1988 through 1989.  Dr. Selesnick was elected to be the team physician for the National Basketball Association All-Star game in February of 1990.  Dr. Selesnick was also the medical director for the Senior Professional Baseball League from 1989 through 1991 and also served as the Miami Tropics team physician for the United States Basketball League in 1991.

He served as the team physician for the Dream Team for the World Basketball Championship in Greece in 1998 and was the Team Physician at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in 2000.

PRESENT

Recently, Dr. Selesnick was an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, Division of Sports Medicine at the University of Miami.  He has since taken over the Sports Medicine Fellowship, co-sponsored by HealthSouth Doctors' Hospital.   He is the team physician for the NBA franchise Miami Heat, WNBA franchise Miami Soli and serves as the team physician for Miami Jai Alai, Dania Jai Alai and Miami-Dade Community College.  He has been the physician for the Ericsson International Players Championships in tennis as well as the Doral-Ryder Open golf tournament.

Dr. Selesnick is known as the "Jock Doc" for his column in The Miami Herald, which is a question and answer column.  He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and is licensed by the State of Florida.  He is certified and recertified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.  He is also currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, American College of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Southern Medical Association, Dade County medical Association, Florida Orthopedic Society, Miami Orthopedic Society, Eastern Orthopedic Society, and the National Basketball Association Team Physician Society.  He is the immediate past President-elect of the NBA Team Physician Society.

Dr. Selesnick has published more than thirty papers in the orthopedic literature related to Arthroscopy, sports medicine, and general such orthopedic surgery.  His publications have appeared in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Physician in Sports Medicine, Yearbook of Sports Medicine, Clinics in Sports Medicine and the Miami Heat magazine.

Dr. Selesnick has lectured nationally and internationally on more than one hundred occasions with topics related to sports medicine, Arthroscopy, and orthopedic surgery.  Miami Metro magazine listed Dr. Selesnick as one of South Florida's top doctors.
